What does custom activewear manufacturing cost?

Why factories cannot send a single price list, which four variables set your unit cost, what you pay at each order size, and the costs first-time buyers forget to budget for.

Short answer

There is no universal price list for custom activewear. Your unit cost is set by four things: the fabric, the order quantity, the construction, and how much branding and packaging you add. As a working reference, a development piece starts at $300, ready-stock mixed orders start at 20 pieces in total per order, and full custom production starts at 200 pieces per style. Anything between those points is quoted per project.

Why factories do not publish a price list

Buyers ask for a price list to budget before spending time on a supplier. The reason factories resist is not secrecy: the same style lands in completely different price brackets depending on choices you have not made yet.

Two buyers can order an identical-looking pair of leggings. One uses a standard stocked knit, the other specifies a custom-dyed colour. One takes a size run from stock colours, the other wants a proprietary print. The garment looks the same in a photo and the cost is not close.

The four things that set your price

**Fabric.** Weight and composition drive the largest share of unit cost. A heavier knit uses more material, and adding elastane or moving to a technical or recycled yarn moves the number again. This is the biggest lever you control.

**Quantity.** Unit cost falls as volume rises, because setup, sampling and cutting preparation spread across more pieces. That is arithmetic, not a negotiating tactic.

**Construction.** A simple pull-on legging and a panelled legging with a shaped waistband and flatlock seams are different amounts of work. Seam count, panel count and finishing steps accumulate.

**Branding and packaging.** Woven labels, printed care labels, hang tags and custom poly bags each carry their own supplier minimums. This is where new brands most often underestimate cost.

What you pay at each order size

There are three entry points, and they are not interchangeable.

A **development piece** starts at $300 for one style, covering basic pattern making, logo application and shipping of your first physical sample. When you proceed to bulk production that $300 is credited against the bulk order.

**Ready-stock mixed orders** start at 20 pieces in total per order. That is a total order minimum, not 20 pieces per style or per colour. Styles and colours can be mixed to reach it, and it is the fastest way to test whether a style sells.

**Full custom production** starts at 200 pieces per style, where the fabric, pattern, labels and packaging are all yours. Sample lead time is planned at 7 to 15 days and bulk production at 20 to 30 days, with approval time, scheduling and shipping counted separately.

Current styles and their published tier pricing are on our [product catalogue](/products), and the full process is on [how it works](/how-it-works).

The costs buyers forget

**Dye-lot minimums.** If you want a colour that is not already in production, the mill opens a dye lot, and mills set a minimum for that. On a small run the fixed mill cost spreads across very few garments, which lifts your unit price sharply. Stock colours avoid this entirely.

**Label and packaging minimums.** Label printers and packaging suppliers have their own minimums, often far above your garment quantity. A short run with fully custom tags can cost more per unit in trims than in fabric.

**Cutting waste on mixed colours.** Running several colours through the same cutting pass creates waste and slows the line. Factories handle it, but it is priced in.

None of these are hidden fees. They are the economics of making clothes in small quantities, and knowing them lets you plan around them.

How to get an accurate number quickly

Send four things and you will get a usable quotation rather than a range: your style reference, the quantity, the colours, and whether you want your own branding. A tech pack helps but is not required; our team can work from references and measurements.

Ask for a quote through the [request form](/rfq), see what we produce on the [factory page](/factory), or [contact us](/contact) directly.

Buyer questions

Can you just send me your price list?

We do not publish one, because the same style spans a wide range depending on fabric, quantity and branding. We can send the product catalogue with tier pricing per style, then a specific quotation.

What is the cheapest way to start?

A ready-stock mixed order: from 20 pieces in total per order, using colours and fabrics already in production. It lets you test the market before committing to custom production.

Why is a custom colour so much more expensive?

Because the mill has to open a dye lot, and dye lots carry a minimum. On a small order that fixed cost is divided across very few garments.

Do I pay for samples separately from bulk?

Yes. A development piece starts at $300, paid before work begins, and is credited against the bulk order when you proceed. It is a credit, not a cash refund.

How many pieces do I need for full custom production?

Full custom production starts at 200 pieces per style, meaning your own fabric, pattern, labels and packaging. Below that, the ready-stock route is the practical option.

What payment terms do you use?

Bulk orders use a 30 percent deposit with the 70 percent balance payable before shipment. The development piece is paid in full before work starts.

Ready to price your own order?

Send your styles, quantities and target market — we will confirm availability, MOQ and shipping before you commit.
